Gift Mugano

Trade & Development Economist

Professor Gift Mugano is the Chief Adviser on African trade and development matters at the FDIWeek.

Professor Gift Mugano (Ph.D) is a Professor of Economics, Director at the Centre for African Governance Development at the Durban University of Technology and a Leading Expert for the BRICS Research Institute. He is a distinguished scholar, a technocrat and a global authority on International Trade, Finance and Development with over nineteen (19) years of extensive experience including policy advisory, consultancy and academic work.

He has published several articles in international journals and book chapters in the field of International Trade, Finance and Development. He authored five books with renowned international publishers, that is, Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan and AOSIS: (1) Trade Liberalisation and Economic Development in Africa; (2) Special Economic Zones: Impact on Economic Development in Africa; (3) SMEs and Economic Development in Africa: Challenges & Policy Options; (4) SMEs Perspective in Africa: Creating Sustainable and Resilient Economies; and (5) Perspectives on Comprehensive Internationalisation of Higher Education.

Professor Mugano supervised six (6) Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) degrees to successful completion and other several postgraduate students in the field of International Trade, Finance and Development; and examined ten (10) doctoral theses (Ph.Ds.) and several postgraduate theses. He has consulted for the Government of Zimbabwe; Government Republic of Namibia, Government of South Africa, Trade Policy Training Centre in Africa (Tanzania), the private sector and international institutions including the World Bank; United Nations Economic Commission for Africa; United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States; United Nations Development Programme; United States Agency for International Development (USAID); UNICEF; Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office of the United Kingdom (FCDO); Germany Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ); International Labour Organisation (ILO); European Union; GFA Consulting Group (Germany); Integration Consulting Group (Germany); National Opinion Research Centre at the University of Chicago (USA); COMESA; British Council; NIR Sweden; Adam Smith International (UK); IMC Worldwide LTD (UK); Cardno Emerging Markets (Belgium); KPMG (UK); the Palladium Group (UK); Ecorys (UK); Transparency International Zimbabwe; Laws Africa & African II (SA); and Syngenta (Switzerland).

Over the years, Prof Mugano produced several policies & technical papers focused on the development of the African continent.
